Preparing For Your Kitten:
Set up a welcoming room. This will be the room your kitten will
stay in for 2-4 weeks. This room should be a small room so the
kitten can feel safe and at the same time be able to explore and
become confident in it's environment. The room should contain a
climber - scratching post - toys - litter box - food and water.
Do not overwhelm your kitten with visitors and other pets until it
becomes familiar with it's environment. Remember everything is
new to it and they are like babies and need a gentle introduction to
their new lives. When it is time to let them explore further, open
the door and let them explore on their own so they know how to get
back to their litter box and their "safe haven".

If you do a lot of sewing like I do, make sure that your cat or kitten can not access any
thread/draw strings from jackets/shoe laces, rubber bands, etc.... I do embroidery and make
sure the door to my sewing room stays closed at all times. Cats have little barbs on their tongues
and when string gets on the tongue it has to go down the hatch, which can cause impaction's
and eventually death if not treated.
Think about getting your kitten/cat micro-chipped if he/she should get out of your home by
accident. That way if a shelter or a veterinarians office gets your cat/kitten turned in they will
search for a micro-chip which will help in the safe return of your pet.
Wrap your lamp cords around the leg of the end table before plugging them into the wall so that
if the cat/kitten gets caught up in it will not pull the lamp down on top of them. You should also
do this if you have a small TV setting on top of a bureau. Secure the cord with U shaped nails
on the back of the bureau.
If you have other pets make sure that they are introduced slowly one pet at a time. During the
first 2 weeks I take the kitten and sit on a chair and let it look around then take it back to it's
"safe haven" when it squirms or wants to get down. Then if you have more than one pet let
only one pet into the room, holding the kitten so that it can see the other pet but the other pet
can not get into the kittens space. Do this for a couple of days letting the other pet get closer
every day. Make sure that your kittens nails have been clipped prior to doing this as you may
end up with some marks on your arm. When a kitten is frightened the first thing it tries to do is
get away. Talk softly while petting to ensure that it feels secure and safe in your arms. Don't go
too fast or you will undo all your progress!
